Read Andrew McIntosh's article Media Bias in Canada (Plain-Language Summary) in the Canadian Encyclopedia.

The Media Studies unit assessment will be in our Google Classroom. You must be logged into a student account to complete the assessment.
It will take place during the first hour of class. Use Pokemon - Enter Pikachu! to prepare for the assessment.
Use the notes from the class website as well as your notebook. The media studies assessment is based on the Filming and Editing Techniques note and lesson. You will be given a series of shots and you will classify the type of shot.
A storyboard allows you to plan the visuals and the audio for a film. I will give you some templates later on in this unit.
An example of how a storyboard is used before the filming.
A second example of how a storyboard is used before the filming.
Let's storyboard the first minute of this music video together. Focus on, camera shots, angles and movements. You will need these as well as transitions for your next assignment.
A storyboard allows you to plan the visuals and the audio for a film. Please use one of the templates below.
Draw stick-figures in the box indicating what the subject is.
In the details section:
the shot number
list the shot / movement / angle of the camera
list the music / sound effect / narration / dialogue
describe the visual
describe the transition
Do a Google Image search for 'storyboard' to see some examples.
Choose a music video that you like. Storyboard the first minute (0:00 - 1:00) of the music video using one of the storyboard templates provided. Your assignment requires a minimum of 10-12 different shots.
When you choose your music video ask yourself, does my choice indicate that I am "A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good"? If you are not sure, ASK ME TO APPROVE YOUR MUSIC VIDEO Choice.
Draw your storyboard on paper using pencil. Take a picture of your drawing and add it to your Google Document.
Trace your pencil with a dark coloured pen.
Use a ruler or straight edge to draw the frame.
Draw your singer / dancer / band members / actors with stick figures.
Include notes for:
shot
movement
angle
transition
arrows to indicate movement (zoom in / out, pan, tilt, track, spin . . .)
you don't have to use arrows to indicate constant movement (like people dancing).
do not include 'dialogue'
Write legibly.
You must storyboard all of the first minute (0:00 - 1:00) of the music video
You need a minimum of 10-12 different shots.
If you have a repetitive shot, please just indicate it by its number. For instance, shot 1 in "Empire State of Mind" is a still photo montage. When it comes up again in shot 4, write: SEE SHOT #1. You don't need to redraw it or indicate shot, movement, angle or transition again.
Take pictures of your pages, and include them as images in a Google Document.
Include an MLA page number, header and title.
On the first page, please include a URL for the YouTube or Vimeo video.
Watching and analyzing these short personal documentaries will allow you to focus on the ideas covered in this unit as well as preparing for the CPT.
These ideas will help you understand how the short documentaries we watched together work. These ideas will also help you with your CPT.
